What images do you think about when you imagine in Hong Kong?
Most people think of a former British colony , or a part of modern China with a democracy( one china but two political systems and a unique culture.) Or a scene from a Jackie Chan or Bruce Lee movie.
The city is all of these things and more. Hong Kong respects its colonial past while looking forward to the future as part of China. It also has a fierce independent streak with its own laws, language (Cantonese), culture and money.
You can still see some signs of an English influence in the city. People still drive on the left hand side of the road like they do in the UK and Japan. Buses are ‘double-decker’ (have two floors) and the plug sockets are UK shaped. People also speak more English than they do in China too.
One of the best things about Hong Kong is the food. You can eat the best of any country you wish. However when you’re in Hong Kong you have to try the Dim Sum’s or Yum Cha. Cantonese food is prepared into bite size portions and is very mild when you compare it to the areas in China that love hot spicy food.
Surprisingly over 70% of Hong Kong is green rolling hills. Outside of the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong city, most of the area is green, mountainous and a short drive away. Victoria peak the cities highest point even has a shopping center and gives some of the most beautiful views of the city. Or at night walk along the harbor front at Kowloon for a view of the city lit up in all its splendor.
Whatever you go to Hong Kong for, it’s shopping, nature, food you won’t be disappointed.
